The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
