British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
